How to change your FB relationship status without everyone knowing about it!

Graph Of When People Break Up On Facebook

Your on Facebook and  have gone through a tough sad break up. You know that if you change your relationship status you will get some of the dumbest comments hurting you even more.   Ok ok ... changing your relationship status does not always mean you are doing it to break up with someone. I know people who do not want to grab attention when they are engaged or even married.   The point is that you DON'T want the world to know that you changed your relationship  status.  Here is how to do it...

If you are using Facebook's timeline

1.) Start on your Facebook Timeline.

2.) Click Update Info

3.) Go to your Family Section

4.) Click on the Edit button. Then Select "Only Me"

5.) Make sure you hit save before changing your status!

6.) Now change your status.

Facebook is Creeping out Users With Facial Scanning

Facebook's users upload millions of photos daily, and Facebook  has added functionality  to add tags to identifying the people in them. Just a few days ago, we found out that Facebook is scanning, with facial recognition software, every single picture that is uploaded to their servers and grouping similar faces.  Doesn't this creepy you out? Its grouping even non-Facebook members.  Yes, you get a message when people tag you but Facebook is storing this information. What could they do with this data? The company could use it to sell you advertisements  or even be used against  you in court with a subpoena.

Facebook's Blog post

There is something small you can do. It still doesn't stop Facebook from grouping data  but ...

If for any reason you don't want your name to be suggested, you will be able to disable suggested tags in your Privacy Settings. Just click "Customize Settings" and "Suggest photos of me to friends." Your name will no longer be suggested in photo tags, though friends can still tag you manually. You can learn more about this feature in our Help Center.

Be aware of what Facbook does and speak out. If we are not heard we might have a new Big Brother.

Suggestion: Post your opinion in their Help Center.

Go Offline in Chat for selected Friends

Facebook in the past integrated Facebook Chat  and allowed you to always be online to all your friends or just not use Chat. The service for some time did not allow you to customize and block any friends. Now, with Facebook lists you can block/ show offline to those friends that you don't want to be bothered by.  To do this create a list of friends that you want to show offline too. Friends-> Edit Friends-> Create a List

After creating a list, head over to Chat and click the green toggle button to set your self as Offline to those individuals.

Now enjoy  your privacy :-)

Facebook Filters Your Wall Feed?

A huge part of Facebook's user have no idea that Facebook filters their friends updates based on how much you interact with certain friends. Basically, on your wall you would see updates, pictures, links, and similar items from  friends that you interact with the most.  In my opinion, Facebook is controlling what I can and can not see and I highly dislike that. To change that

Go to "Most Recent" on your wall and click "Edit Options":

In the "Edit Your Friends Settings" drop down select "All of your friends and pages" and click " Save":

and you are done. Now you will receive updates from all  your friends!

Who has Unfriended You on Facebook?

I can say that three people this week have unfriended me on Facebook. You know who you are! Well, before I start any drama, I have found a browser add-on that notifies and integrates into Facebook to let you know who has unfriended you. It works really well because it seems as if Facebook has integrated this feature. Simply install the add-on, Unfriend Finder, to your browser(Firefox, Google Chrome, Safari, and Opera) and log into Facebook. You will have four buttons in the upper right hand side of your account instead of three. The "Unfriends" button will let you know when someone has decided not to be your friend anymore. Also, this is the right way to do it, do not fall for the scams inside Facebook.

Clean Up Your Wall

In my case, Facebook has become a daily routine where I post and interact with my friends.  My profile is my presence to them. There first glance show them who I am but, what about my wall? Your wall is what you convey and speak to them. Therefore, I keep it clean from  Facebook games and apps like below: In my opinion, this obstructs the view you give to people and shy's them away.

Every time I see a Facebook app or game has posted something on my wall, that I do not like, I block it by right clicking on the "X" and then select "Block...".  From now on the app or game will not have permission to post on my wall.

Switch Back to the Old Facebook Photo Viewer

Just recently, Facebook released a new  way to look at pictures through their new picture viewer. Many do not like it, including myself, but maybe it just tales time to get use to. The new viewer centers the image with a black background and also allows you to easily download the image, share, comment, and tag someone. I bet you just want to know how to get rid of it. Well if you hit F5 on your keyboard when it the viewer shows up it will just go away. That simple. F5 is your answer.

Beware of Facebook Scams/Hijacks

Facebook, on a daily basis, is fighting spam, scams, and hijack.  I bet all of us at one point havebeen scamed over once or even become a victim of these malicious posts but here is the crucial question. Did you know that it happened to you? Or did you just ignore it? Facebook is very popular and you need to know what to watch out for. Here is an example of a wall post that hijacked your Facebook by clicking on it.

When you clicked on  the post, it posted itself  to your friends wall. This one you can say is pretty obvious but there are other that say," Here is a picture of you from last night, LOOK!". These are not so obvious and you must be careful because you're so anxious to know what they caught you doing last night.  Do not fall for these traps.

The rule of thumb, DO NOT CLICK ON THINGS YOU ARE UNSURE OF!  This includes emails and just anywhere when you use a computer.

Do nothing for two minutes!

Can you actually stay in one place for two minutes? I know we are all busy and we are always on the go. Now imagine this, you  looking  into the sunset on the beach while hearing the waves come in and out.  Sounds peaceful and relaxing. Well, that can be achieved from your computer. Go to  www.donothingfor2minutes.com and take the challenge. Here is what you have to do. Once you click on the link do not touch the mouse or keyboard for 2 minutes! Sounds easy huh. I do no think so. Have fun.

Did you forget about Myspace already?
[caption id="" align="alignright" width="180" caption="Image via CrunchBase"]Image representing MySpace as depicted in Crun...[/caption]

This new year is nice and fresh but if you look over the past years to all the accounts you have created, there are probably many. Whats the risk with all these unused accounts? Your personal information is exposed to the company that has it. An example is Myspace. It was popular years ago and we all uploaded photos, maybe gave our phone numbers or other really sensitive information. As this year gets older I say to look over all your old accounts. Myspace is a huge one. Most of us just moved over to Facebook and left Myspace as is. I would go over to those old accounts and shut them down. Delete all the information that you would not want the company to sell or take advantage of.  Delete all personal information from old accounts!

A little about Wikileaks and what we should learn from it
[caption id="" align="alignright" width="202" caption="Image via Wikipedia"]Logo used by Wikileaks[/caption]

We are not a news site but an advice/tip technology site yet Wikileaks can share with us something very valuable. Yes, it has been in the news lately because of the controversal war documents it has released to the world. In my opinion, I favor this. Although the government may disagree. Various technology companies have put pressure on Wikileaks, like their DNS provider and Amazon with their hosting to shut down their service to Wikileaks. I believe  no criminal act has been done to leak these documents. They are just a journalistic company like The New York Times.  If you go to Wikileaks.com it might be blocked but there are many mirror sites, 507 sites to be exact.  Wikileaks still lives and will never end. It's on the internet. Where am I heading with this? Everything online lives. As a user on Facebook, I see things that you may not want to have online. Do you have embarrassing pictures on there? Think about your future. I see Wikileaks as a great example to the power of technology for the good and the bad. In the case of Wikileaks,

"Could become as important a journalistic tool as the Freedom of Information Act." - Time Magazine

I agree! This site will battle big corporations and governments to be transparent.

A shocking story that was leaked by Wikileaks:

Black Friday Ads
[caption id="" align="alignright" width="180" caption="Image by Ian Muttoo via Flickr"]Best Buy, Toronto[/caption]

Black Friday is around the corner and it's that time of year when people go crazy over low prices. I have some friends who are doing a tailgate to gather some cheap electronics: flat screen TV's, hard drives and much more. I smell some very good deals. How would I know where to go? Some individuals leaked some ads  to some major stores. Below are some:

How to make an Animated picture(GIF)

Remember Myspace? I know everyone is on Facebook now and animated pictures are not  popular anymore but you never know when trends can reappear.  Today's tip is how to create an  animated picture or also called GIF. If you head over to Picasion.com and browse over to upload your pictures in sequence. You are able to change the speed and size of GIF.  When you set just click "Create Animation". Below is an example.

How much time do you spend on Facebook?
[caption id="" align="alignright" width="139" caption="Image via Wikipedia"]Google Chrome Icon[/caption]

If you use Chrome as a browser and are curious on how much valuable time you actually waste on Face book. You can find out by downloading a Google Chrome extension.  It simply tells you how much time you are on Facebook.

You need to have Google Chrome installed and the Google Chrome extension.

Download all your tagged facebook pictures

Facebook is one of the biggest photo sharing websites out there. Also, we upload so many albums to share with friends and family. We have albums for every major event we have. Another thing to remember is when friends tag us on their photos. Here is the problem. What if you actually want to download all the photos you have been tagged in for personal storage. I found a piece of open source software that download all the photos you have been tagged in. It is called photo grabber. Download it and give it a try.

Facebook has exposed you. Not yet?

How public is your Facebook page? Do you care? Who is searching for you? Your future employer? There is a website called Zesty.ca/facebook. This website tells you what is publicly available to the whole world.  Just recently some people scraped Facebook and bundled a lot of public data and put it up as a torrent. Many people have downloaded that torrent since.  Could you be in that bundle? Make sure you are 100% in control of your profile. Go to the website to to see what is public. "To find your Facebook ID or alias, go to your Facebook profile and look at the URL bar in your browser. If you have a numeric ID, it will appear at the end of the URL. If you have an alias, it will appear right after "facebook.com/".

Get Facebook notifications on your desktop

Are you that kind of person that logs into  Facebook everyday? Doesn't it get annoying to see what wall post you have received or who has poked you? There is a handy program that sits in the system tray called fbquick that does just that. You can customize it to your needs. You may set it to check for new notifications and filter things you do not want to receive  alert for. For example, every time someone tags you. I guarantee this will make it easier to coexist with Facebook. That's why we are here for, A New Day, New Tip!
